Dr. Seleem named Tyler and Frances Young Endowed Chair in Bacteriology by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

Our International multi-institutional collaborative work (The value of antimicrobial peptides in the age of resistance) was published recently in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. The Lancet Infectious Diseases ranks first among infectious diseases journals, so it’s definitely something to be proud of.

USAID Funds Our Five-year $30 Million Cooperative Project With Egypt

Guided by the ambitious goals of Egypt’s strategic plan for development, Egypt Vision 2030, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Tuesday (April 2) launched a five-year, $30 million cooperative project with Cairo University and four U.S. land-grant universities to create a Center of Excellence for Agriculture in the Faculty of Agriculture at Cairo University. The Center of Excellence for Agriculture (COEA) aims to work with Egyptian universities to build higher education program that will equip Egyptian agriculture faculty and students with the tools to make an immediate impact in Egyptian agriculture as research scientists, employees, policy-makers or innovators.

New NIH Grant Helps Pursue Faster Method for Diagnosis Blood Infections

Dr. Mohamed Seleem, professor of microbiology in the Purdue Veterinary Medicine Department of Comparative Pathobiology, and his collaborator at Boston University have received a $1.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for their research to develop a faster means of diagnosing often lethal bloodstream infections.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Funds Our Microsecond Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing of Bloodstream Infections Research

November 2018 – in collaboration with Dr. Ji-Xin Cheng, Boston University, we were awarded a grant from the NIAID (NIH) to develop a microsecond-scale stimulated Raman spectroscopic imaging platform to enable in situ detection of a single bacterium in complex environment at sub-micron resolution and early determination of its response to an antimicrobial drug.

Haroon Mohammad successfully defends his dissertation!

November 2016 - Congratulations to Haroon who successfully defended his dissertation entitled, " Antimicrobial Characterization and Therapeutic Applications of Novel Synthetic Thiazole Compounds against Multi-drug-Resistant Staphylococci and Enterococci." Haroon published 20 manuscripts including 9 first authors and was awarded the first Purdue Institute for Drug Discovery prestigious Post-Doctoral Fellowship to continue his work in our group.

Children’s Book Series Spotlights our lab

September 2016- our lab was featured in a new children’s book entitled “Macaws Need Medicines, Too!” published as part of a Purdue Veterinary Medicine led program supported by the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) program of the National Institutes of Health.  Called This is How We “Role”, the PVM-led program aims to increase elementary school students’ awareness of the vital role veterinarian-scientists play in keeping people healthy.

Shankar Thangamani successfully defends his dissertation!

August 2016 - Congratulations to Shankar who successfully defended his dissertation entitled, "REPURPOSING NON-ANTIMICROBIAL DRUGS TO TREAT MULTI-DRUG RESISTANT BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL INFECTIONS." Shankar published 17 manuscripts including 13 first authors and accepted a postdoc position in University of California San Diego!

National Science Foundation (NSF) funds our Targeted delivery of antimicrobial to intracellular bacterial infection research!

August 2014 – In collaboration with Dr. Yeo lab we were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a pH-sensitive delivery system (semi-nanoparticles) to promote intracellular release of antimicrobial peptides and killing of intracellular pathogens (Brucella, Listeria, MRSA and Salmonella).

National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) funds our Staphylococcus aureus bovine mastitis research!

August 2014 –we were awarded a grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to study the ability Target Staphylococcus aureus causing bovine mastitis.

Showalter Research Trust funds our antimicrobial drug discovery research!

July 2012 –we were awarded a grant from Showalter Research Trust funds to develop novel antimicrobial compounds against multidrug resistant bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
